                                      Elk Grove April News Letter
It’s spring on the Delta! The branches of trees, blackberry, and bank brush leaves are so fat; they drip a green fluid onto the banks emitting a wonderful perfume that tickles your nose with a sweet hypnotic spring essence and pleasure. New Tully growth is everywhere and the dead tullies float by your boats causing you to dart in and out to avoid engine damage. Hot sun beats down on us all day and a dead tide changes the fishing conditions. Wild life is abundant and daunting. Sea Lions are splashing, chasing and eating fish in Franks Track. A variety of muskrats of different sizes and colors are seen everywhere. Some muskrats and beavers are very aggressive splashing their tails against the water, screaming warnings not to come too close. Birds and ducks abound and spawning crappie, blue gilds, and carp tease your fishing line, ripping your plastic baits and causing fishing anxiety throughout the day. “Oh! The Delta what a great place to be,” Ken and Lyle, our Club leaders, are still in sink winning again with a solid weight of 21.04 lbs.  They traveled all the way to the port of Stockton, Disappointment, White’s, and even Big Break to capture the win.  They said they culled 30-40 fish.  Second place was Dan and Joe only 4oz back with 21.00 lbs even.  Joe said that they might have won if he had spent some time on their culling process.  They fished Frank’s where a 600-700 lb sea lion was frolicking and splashing, breaking their concentration; they went to Seven Mile Slough where Danny caught an 11lbs Striper much to his chagrin and went back to Franks where they finished off their limit.  They were using Square faced Crank baits and 10 inch worms.

Isaac and Dave had super sight fishing day with 15.71lbs fishing docks in Franks using Cranks, Sinkos, jerk baits and Drop shotting.  Their secret was “You had to put the bait right in front of the nose of the fish.” They dropped a couple fish that might have made the difference. Brian and John came in with 11.05 lbs. Their fish caught in Franks with Blades over beds. Garret and I caught 9.32lbs but were disappointed because during pre-fish I had caught a huge bag and was looking forward to having a great day.  It just wasn’t to be.  Kevin and Doug fished muddy water most of the day and could only get one fish weighing a respectful 3.08 lbs.  George and Lloyd had a sickness and had to withdraw.

Our tournament at Folsom has been changed to the Delta, April 21st, launching from  B and W ramp at safe light, 5:30 a.m.  See you Saturday.

Oroville Tournament Results

After a week of rain and lightning storms threatening for Saturday, the Elk Grove bassmasters were up for battle regardless of any kind of inclement weather to seek the coveted Oroville Bass fishing title.  Much to everyone’s surprise, Mother Nature provided us with a  cold, clear day with no rain during the tournament.

  1. A total of 28 bass were caught weighing 58.67lbs.  Everyone caught at least one fish. (Middle Fork) First Place was Brian Ferris and John Airozo with 10.88lbs using worm and jigs. Second place went to our current club leaders Ken Hicks and Kyle Scanlon posting 10.66lbs using Jig, drop shot on the main lake. With 10.59lbs. Chris and Matt Dal Porto took third place using Alabama rigs and crank baits. Matt said he had a really big one on but came unbuttoned because the hook was too small on his umbrella rig. Fourth place was Stephen and Garrett Gatewood with 8.67 pounds. I lost an earlier 3plus which would have made it interesting. Darter heads and mojo rigs. (North Fork).  Fifth place Doug Shockly and Kevin Hockstrasser with 4.91lbs in the middle fork with drops shots. Sixth Place Bev and Joel Dal Porto with 4.34lbs using crank baits on flats. Seventh Place was Dave Mercado and Isaac Johnson with 4.14lbs Eight Place George Hogue and Lloyd Sparks 3.62lbs, Ninth was Dan Olson who fished by himself catching .081.  When I thanked Dan for showing up and having to pay for both members, he smiled and said, “Always because I’m part of a club and there is nothing I would rather do than fish with friends.” I hope we all have Danny’s positive attitude.
  2. Our next tournament is at Folsom in April and it should be hot!hot!hot! Spawn should be in full swing. I think we are going to see some huge bags.  Thanks go out to George and Lloyd for being the fish holding boat and everyone who helped with the weigh-in.

    FEBRUARY 2012 FOLSOM TOURNAMENT
ONE MONTH EXTENSION FOR ADDING NEW MEMBERS

For those of you who still want to join, we extended our club enrollment for one more month.  If you want to join, please contact me at your earliest convenience. There were a few interested persons who wanted to join next month so we extended it.

History: Folsom Lake is formed by Folsom Dam, constructed in 1955 to control the American River. The dam and lake are part of the Folsom Project, which also includes the Nimbus after bay reservoir and dam facilities. The Folsom Project, operated by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, is part of the Central Valley Project, a multipurpose project that provides flood control, hydroelectricity, drinking water, and water for irrigation.  The once important town of Mormon Island is almost forgotten and is now buried under Folsom Lake. Mormon Island was situated where the North and South Forks of the American River join on the route from Sutter's Fort to his sawmill at Coloma. It was one of the earliest mining camps set up after the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill. The Mormons first arrived in California on the ship Brooklyn which was chartered by Sam Brannan (a member of the Mormon Church at that time) and carried 238 members of the church relocating to California under the direction of Brigham Young. This is the same Sam Brannan that founded San Francisco and also Sacramento.

By summer of 1848, Mormon Island had over a hundred men. Samuel Brannan, the "Spiritual Guide and director for the Mormon population of New Helvetia and other districts of California" opened a store there. For quite some time, Brannan required the miners to tithe. That is, give one tenth of their earnings, to the Mormon Church. The camp was called Mormon Island because the early miners cut a channel across one edge of the gravel bar there, forming a small island. The town quickly outgrew the small gravel bar. The completion of the Sacramento Valley Railroad in 1856 to what was then Granite City and the subsequent establishment of the town of Folsom marked the beginning of a long decline for the once important town. Mormon Island is almost forgotten and is now buried under Folsom Lake.

So, every time you cross the peninsula in front of Folsom Dam you cross some major history of California.  You might be catching a bass from some old cement bridge or building that once was Mormon Island. I also had heard many stories about the underwater city i.e. that there are cat fish over 100 lbs swimming among the ruins.

On a cold dreary day at Folsom Lake, moisture covered the windows of the boats. Most members were there by 5:30 am waiting for Fish and Game to open the gates.  Many members had prefished Folsom and bantered reasons about as to why the fish were not biting. With teeth clenched and enough clothing to fight off a hurricane, 10 boats and twenty members blasted off at safe light. There is always a tingling on your back, a loss of breath, an adrenalin rush, and tears slipping under your goggles, when you get to your favorite spot first and no other boats are parked on it. “Yes, we have it all to ourselves.”  Our bite and many others were almost non-existent. In fact if it hadn’t been for Garrett and a kamikaze fish, we would have blanked. Many members caught trout and salmon and were disappointed but their stomachs won’t be that night. The sunlight that showed through the day was as cold as a midwinter’s kiss and though it illuminated the foggy haze with damp conditions, silence filled the air.

For a few members who made the appropriate adjustment, they found the evasive black bass and limited. Joel and Bev Dal Porto won the tournament with 11.79lbs using drop shot and sinkos in the rocks. Ken Hicks, defending champion fishing by himself  because his son was sick, caught a limit dropping shoting rocks and grass, and took 2nd place with 10.77lbs. “Get well soon Kyle” George Hogue and Lloyd Sparke took third place with four fish 7.96lbs using Carolina rigs with worms covering the banks around the entire lake. Brian Ferris and John Airozo took 4th place (6.90lbs) and a 4.44pound spot for big fish on a smoke purple Hula grub. Brian caught the fish up the South Fork within the first 5 minutes of the day and thought it was going to be an excellent day but got only two more bites the rest of the day. Fifth place Dough Shockley and Kevin Hochstrasser 5.73 pounds, 6th place Stephen and Garrett Gatewood (2.50lbs), 7th place Isaac Johnsonand Dave Mercado  (1.91lbs ) Matt and Chris Dal Porto 8th place with 1.25lbs and 9 and 10th place Blanked.

Cassie, from Fish and Game department was there to watch the weigh-in and all of the single members watched her. Cassie is a Del Campo and CSUS graduate. Cassie stated that everything was OK ; she commented that a few times not enough water was in the weigh bags as we put them in the designated transfer boat.  Special thanks should be given to Joe Zentner for teaching all of us the process a few years ago.  Thanks Joe.

We all had fun and are bonding as a club.   Members thanked the winners and are looking forward when they will hoist up the Elk Grove Trophies.

 See you at Oroville.

Elk Grove News Letter January

 January 2012 Oroville Tournament

Following a blistering, bellowing, and belligerent storm Friday, the first fishing tournament of the year took place Saturday at Lake Oroville. Lake Oroville is also known as Lake Edmonston Reservoir which is fed by the Feather River completed in 1967. Lake Oroville is the tallest earth-fill lake in the United States and is the second largest earth-fill dam in the world second only to the Aswan Dam in Egypt.

It was a cold morning with an on and off gentle mist with flashes of clear sky in the foreground. You could feel the tension and excitement in the air and the waffling smell of gases and oil as we blasted off at safe light.  Morning intermittent gray showers filled the sky. Mother Nature was in full regalia; wolves, male and female deer, turkeys, squirrels, and a multitude of wild birds were often sighted in the coves due to the rain run-off. It is a beautiful lake. Around noon the sun came out and the temperature went up and pounds of clothing could be taken off. Fishing was tough and a variety of baits were used including swim baits, crank baits, and multitude of worms and jigs.

The winners Ken Hicks and Kyle Scanlon with 10.22lbs caught their bass with jigs and worms. They also had big fish 2.61lbs. Second place was Chris and Matt Del Porto with 5.05lbs  and could not decide what they used. Third place was Joel and Bev Del Porto with 4.29lbs using crank baits and worms. Fourth place was David Mercado and Isac Johnson with 3.81lbs dropshoting with worms and Fifth place was Joe Berg and Danny  Olson with 3.16lbs worms. Sixth place Stephen and Garrett Gatewood had the new president’s curse, Blank.  “We will be back!!!”

Our next event is Lake Folsom on the third Saturday  February 18, 2012.  This is the last chance for new members or old members to sign-up.  Be there early so that we can blast off at safe light.  Have a great Valentine’s Day and we will meet up at Folsom.
